E-bikes and electric scooters are a popular way to get around, and knowing the rules helps everyone share our streets and sidewalks safely. Following the adoption of Ordinance 2716, the City of Richmond has created an online guide to help residents understand the rules for e-bikes and motorized play vehicles.
The guide brings the information together in an easy-to-follow format for riders, parents, and families. You’ll find explanations of the three classes of e-bikes, where each type can be ridden, helmet requirements, and rules for electric scooters, motorized skateboards, go-karts, and other motorized play vehicles.
Before your next ride, take a few minutes to get familiar with your wheels. Vehicles that look similar may have different rules depending on how they operate and how fast they can travel. Parents are encouraged to review the guide with younger riders and talk through where they plan to ride.
Whether you’re heading out for a family ride or considering an e-bike or scooter purchase, the guide is a helpful place to start.
