City Gym with a New Look

Richmond gymnasium

The walls of the Richmond City Gym have echoed the excited voices of many children, teachers, and adults as through the years it has served first as a school gym and now as a recreational gem for our city. On Saturday, January 7, 2017, it celebrated new life with the ribbon-cutting ceremony for its re-modeled look. City Administrator Ron Brohammer reviewed the history as well as how the renovation was accomplished, then members of the Chamber of Commerce, Recreation Department, and mayor and city council officially re-opened the facility. Immediately it was used, as a children’s basketball tournament filled the rest of the day.

A new “Mondo” rubberized floor will allow a wide variety of sports, exercising, parties, community activities and get-togethers. New bleachers, paint, tile, clean-up and renovated bathrooms add to the “new and improved” look that will welcome hundreds from our city.

Special thanks for the many hours of planning and labor by city staff and the generosity of people who have enabled this valuable asset to be available to our citizens. Financing for the update began with a gift from local benefactor, the late Ray Gill, then increased by benefits led by local sports teams, and finally through budgeting by the City of Richmond and the Recreation Department.

Haley Williams and Shannon Alley, Recreation Department staff, invite you to come to the City Hall complex to have a look, or call 816-776-5304, ext.116 to schedule your group to use the gym. More details and reservation forms are also available here. Enjoy the sounds once again echoing off the walls of our city gym!
